Has anyone read either of the two books, and if you can comment on how good you rate these publications:

Professional Stock Trading, System Design and Automation
Mark R. Conway, Aaron N Behle (ISBN 0971853649)

Backtesting of Computerised Trading
Mark Jurik (ISBN 0735200777)

Any comments good / bad appreciated.

I have not seen either book available in Australia, so may need to be ordered from OS.

Cheers

Hello Bruce,

I am not familiar with the first book but the second one by Jurik is a recommended reference in the TradeSim user manual. I bought my copy years ago from McGills in Melbourne.

Hi David,

Thanks for your response on the Jurik book. I have placed an order with McGill's.

Best regards

For simplicity and easy to understand language youll go a long way to better David's TRADESIM MANUAL.

But if your really into it and Mathamatically inclined you must have in your Library Trading Systems and Methods By Kaufmann (Perry).

I have Juriks book and is fine but the other 2 in my veiw are better.

Hi Tech,

Agree that David’s TradeSim manual is a system test reference book in itself. The Kaufman book is also one of the best.

I ordered the Jurik book today, so will have to wait to form an opinion. The Conway / Behle book is a more recent print (2002 I think) and I have seen some excellent reviews on overseas sites. I was wondering whether anyone in Oz could recommend before buying.

Cheers

I think Nick Radge is promising/threatening to write one, that should be good though it would probably be using TradeStation and Trading Recepies rather than TradeSim.

You may want to look at "Breaking the Black Box" by Martin Pring. This book covers system design and testing albeit using Metastock's limited system testing capabilties.

David heard that was pretty horrible.

"Pring" that is.

I'm a bit late, but better late than never. I've read the Pring's book and it is pretty horrid, but there are a few ideas, that to my mind are worth testing. The book on trading systems that I found very helpful is Tushar Chande's “Beyond Technical Analysis”. The edition I've read was from 1997, but I've seen the new one in the book store, from 2001 (?). I would certainly recommend it.

I have the latest Tushar Chande's book, and it is one of my favourite books on trading.

I believe developing a successful computer based mechanical trading system is a very specialised part of trading. I am trying to accumulate books that provide extensive explanations towards the approach various trader’s have taken towards their system design, as the main focus of the book, as distinct from developing a more general trading plan.

I feel that Martin Pring’s book is worth having on your bookshelf, but there are much better (and more expensive) quality books from authors who have devoted considerable time doing system design, and these authors provide better coverage in sharing their successes and failures.

Cheers

The Pring book is good from a conceptual perspective but not a nuts and bolts book.

My favourite books can be found at this post http://www.compuvision.com.au/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=278

The best I have found and read is
"Quantitative Trading Systems"
By Howard Bundy.

A PHD.
Easy to read heaps of Amibroker formulas and templates and the REAL nuts and bolts of systems testing clearly laid out for those of us who aren't PHD's.

Google Howard B Bundy and by from his website.
If your serious about systems testing this is the book you'll want.

Here it is!
