Is it possible to program tradesim to enter a trade on the long side and have a protective stop that also functions as an entry on the short side if the market goes against me, and vica versa?

Yes, it is possible to program a MetaStock trade signals indicator which incorporates a trailing stop, and then reference these long/short signals in a MetaStock/TradeSim exploration.
